Born in 980, Avicenna had been the preeminent philosopher of the Islamic world, a man as cosmopolitan in his travels and outlook as he was prolific in his work. In many ways he was the most important product of several centuries of assimilation of the Greek scientific and philosophical curriculum, and in the Latin West he was revered as an original and penetrating philosopher as well as the author of the Canon, which became one of Europe’s chief medical texts.
