Monumen Simpang Lima Gumul (The Five Points Intersection Monument of Gumul) serves as a central hub for Kediri. It marks the convergence of roads from five different regions within Kediri. Constructed between 2003 and 2008 under the regency administration of Ir. Soetrisno, the monument symbolizes a significant junction in Kediri Regency’s history. Its purpose is to commemorate the relocation of the regency center from the Municipality of Kediri to Pamenang, an area within the Regency of Kediri.
At first glance, the monument may evoke comparisons to the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. However, closer inspection reveals distinct differences. Instead of European-style statues, the monument features statues from the Kediri Kingdom era. Notably, a statue of Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, stands adjacent to the monument, accompanied by carved paintings depicting Kediri’s prehistory.
A beloved destination for both locals and visitors, the monument boasts a unique entry point. Accessible by parking across the roundabout and traversing a tunnel, reaching the monument can be unfamiliar for those unacquainted with the area. “I really want to take photos there, but I don’t know where to park,” expressed a visitor from Ngawi who halted by the roadside near the roundabout. However, nearby police officers are available to guide visitors to the convenient and spacious parking lot.
